Urbanization in India is a continuous historical process that began in ancient times and developed through medieval, colonial, and modern periods. Early cities such as Harappa and Mohenjo-Daro were important centers of trade and administration. During the medieval period, cities like Delhi and Agra grew under strict political rule. The British colonial period promoted urban growth by developing port cities such as Kolkata, Mumbai, and Chennai for trade and governance. After independence in 1947, urbanization increased due to industrialization, economic opportunities, and rural-to-urban migration. According to the Census of India, the urban population rose from 17.3% in 1951 to 31.1% in 2011. This paper studies the historical growth, causes, and importance of urbanization in shaping India’s economic and social development over time.
