Tariffs are among the most important instruments of trade policy used by governments to regulate international trade. They influence the flow of goods across borders and affect domestic industries, government revenues, and consumer prices. In the context of India, tariffs play a crucial role in shaping the country’s import and export structure. This research paper examines the conceptual understanding of tariffs in international trade, historical evolution, their types, objectives and economic implications in relation to Indian exports and imports. Tariffs, as instruments of trade policy, embody the tension between protectionism and liberalization. While they safeguard domestic industries and generate revenue, they also distort global trade flows and provoke retaliatory measures. The study also highlights how tariff policies affect trade competitiveness, economic development and international trade relations. It plays a dual role of tariffs as both economic tools and geopolitical instruments, emphasizing the need for balanced application in a globalized economy. The paper concludes that tariffs remain a significant policy tool in India’s trade framework despite the increasing trend toward trade liberalization and free trade agreements.
