Access to food, employment opportunities of the people in Sundarban areas of West Bengal-A case study

Abstract

The world’s largest contiguous mangrove forest Sundarbans comprises of 19 Community Development blocks in North 24-Parganas and 24-Parganas districts. The ecosystem of Sundarbans is biologically protective and taxonomically diverse ecosystems of the Indian Sub-continent. In this region ecological balance hampers due to reckless and random economic development in these areas. It is again due to rise in sea level, salt water contamination, more storms and flood, and draught. Human life and health are also affected. Land use pattern, lack of employment opportunities are the turning point of the socio-economic activity pattern. The population growth in this region is found to be high over the decades. A big percentage of people gets one square mill a day. The people have no options other than to return its traditional agricultural activities.
